Brownstone Townhouse in Manhattan, New York

Stay The Night Bed and Breakfast

New York vacation rentalThis beautifully renovated brownstone townhouse, with its prime location between 5th and Madison Avenues in the best neighborhood in Manhattan, is absolutely hands down my favorite place to stay in the area for the price.  This isn’t a traditional B&B situation, which can sometimes seem to force socializing with strangers over stale donuts and corny group activities in the lobby.  This luxurious townhouse is ideal for people who want their privacy, as well as for those traveling in groups.  If you want a real home away from home experience that a hotel just won’t provide, this is the place to stay.  All the convenience of staying in a fancy hotel is provided (including microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and maid service), but for a much lower price and with much more for your money, especially for this great location.  Near Fifth Avenue shopping, the major museums, and right on Central Park, the tree lined block is peacefully quiet and absolutely safe.

The townhouse offers a choice of three spacious Victorian suites, a separate one bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and two queen size beds, or smaller guest rooms with shared bathrooms (ideal for singles on a budget).  The suites, decorated with antique furniture and plush carpeting, have either a two-person Jacuzzi or large cast iron tubs, two queen or twin beds, and can possibly accommodate a third person with a roll away bed (depending on which suite you stay in).  The architecture is simply stunning, with high ceilings, big arched windows, and antique moldings.  The apartment, which is on the fourth floor, has skylights.  The views are lovely and look out on cozy gardens or charming 93rd Street, depending on which accommodation you choose.

This property attracts visitors from all over the world.  During my stay there, I met a woman visiting from Warwickshire, a couple from San Francisco, and a business traveler from Toronto.  I recommend booking in advance, as there is often a waiting list.  They require an upfront 20% deposit, which is refundable if you cancel within a week of your planned arrival date.  They are pretty accommodating about cancellations.  If they can fill your spot with someone from their waiting list, they will give you back your full deposit.  Rates run from $75-$155 per night in the off season.  If you plan to arrive late at night (after 8:00 p.m.), plan to pay for it.  After 8:00 p.m. there is a $20 charge, and after 10:00 p.m. there is a $40 charge.  They don’t have a traditional hotel’s front desk or check-in system, so they have to hire someone to greet late-night arrivals.  After you have received your key, you may come and go as you please for the rest of your stay.  Smoking is not allowed, and neither are pets.
